Mindo, 60 km away from the capital Quito, is situated 1'200 m above sea level in a subtropical area between the Andes and the coast. During
the 2? hour bustrip from Quito to Mindo, you will pass by "Mitad del Mundo" and the terrific forest as you descend 1'600 meters.
Mindo has about 2'500 inhabitants whose livelihood comes mainly from cattle breeding, agriculture and tourism. This wonderful and peaceful
place is nestled between mountain chains and surrounded by 19'000 hectares of primary and secondary forests. This area counts more than 500
different kind of birds and about 40 different sorts of butterlies, which is the biggest variety in so a small area in South America.
