MOST VISITS TO ECUADOR ARE TROUBLE FREE. SAFETY AND SECURITY
Ecuador has returned to normal after civil disturbances over the period 21-22 January, which culminated in a change of Presidency.
However, a formal state of emergency to allow the government to deploy troops in support of the police remains in place should there be a
recurrence of demonstrations.Travellers should monitor press, radio and TV reports or contact the British Embassy in Quito for advice.
Visitors should use only licensed tour operators and guides. Crime, including rape, is increasing in Ecuador, in part as a consequence of
economic difficulties. Tourist police now operate in the Old Town and at Quito Airport. Travellers should be particularly vigilant in the
towns and cities and exercise caution in remote and isolated areas throughout the country. Many tourist areas are specifically targeted and
there has been an increase in attacks on tour company vehicles.
Pirate attacks are increasing in the waters around Ecuador particularly in
and around the ports of Guayaquil and Puerto Bolivar The Travel Advice Unit advises against all travel to the following: AFGHANISTAN, BURUNDI,
